Government Launches PM e-Drive Scheme to Promote Electric Trucks in India

PM e-Drive Scheme official launch

In a major push toward cleaner logistics and sustainable transport, the Government of India has launched the PM e-Drive Scheme to promote the use of electric trucks across the country. The move is being hailed as a game-changer for the commercial transportation sector, which has long been dominated by fossil-fuel-driven heavy vehicles.

A Strategic Leap Towards Green Mobility

Announced by the Ministry of Heavy Industries, the PM e-Drive Scheme is crucial when India is working aggressively to cut down carbon emissions and reduce dependency on imported fuels. The scheme specifically targets the electrification of medium and heavy-duty trucks, a segment often overlooked in previous EV initiatives like FAME I and II.

According to official statements, the government will provide direct incentives and subsidies to logistics companies, fleet operators, and OEMs (original equipment manufacturers) to accelerate the adoption of electric trucks.

This PM e-Drive Scheme is expected to not only reduce the logistics industry’s carbon footprint but also encourage the manufacturing of electric heavy vehicles within India, aligning with the Make in India vision.

Key Features of PM e-Drive Scheme

The scheme is designed to cover several aspects of electric trucking:

  • Capital Incentives: Financial support will be extended to buyers of electric trucks based on the vehicle’s battery capacity and range.
  • Charging Infrastructure: Special focus will be given to building EV charging stations along national highways and major freight corridors.
  • Battery Swapping Model: The scheme also explores support for battery swapping facilities to address long-haul trucking challenges.
  • Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs): The government encourages private players to collaborate in infrastructure, R&D, and pilot projects.
  • Green Logistics Zones: Plans are in place to designate specific areas as “Green Freight Zones” where only electric trucks will be allowed to operate.

Why It Matters

Diesel-powered trucks are among the biggest polluters in India’s transport system. According to a 2023 report by TERI (The Energy and Resources Institute), medium and heavy-duty trucks contribute to over 60% of vehicular emissions despite accounting for less than 5% of the total vehicle population.

The PM e-Drive Scheme aims to reverse this trend. By incentivising electric trucks, the government hopes to reduce India’s transport-related emissions by 30% by 2030, a goal that also aligns with its commitments under the Paris Climate Agreement.

Industry Reaction

Industry leaders have largely welcomed the scheme. Tata Motors, one of India’s leading commercial vehicle makers, has already hinted at plans to expand its EV truck portfolio. A senior executive at the company said, “This scheme gives us the momentum we needed to invest confidently in large-scale electric trucking solutions.

Similarly, Logistics tech startups like Rivigo and Delhivery are exploring pilot projects to integrate electric trucks into their long-haul operations.

The Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) called the scheme “a bold step” and emphasised the importance of inter-ministerial coordination to make it successful.

Challenges Ahead

While the scheme is a progressive step, the road ahead is not without bumps. Here are a few anticipated challenges:

  • High upfront cost of EV trucks compared to diesel counterparts
  • Lack of long-haul charging stations across highways
  • Range anxiety among fleet operators
  • Need for large-scale R&D and pilot runs

Experts believe that for the scheme to succeed, it must be accompanied by supportive state-level policies, financial instruments, and tax benefits.

What’s Next?

The government plans to implement the scheme in phases. Phase 1 (2025–27) will focus on urban logistics and intercity routes. Phase 2 will scale up to pan-India implementation, including port-based logistics hubs and cold-chain transportation.

A national EV trucking roadmap is expected to be released soon by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. This will provide clearer guidance on standardisation, performance benchmarks, and eligibility criteria for incentives.

Final Thoughts

The PM e-Drive Scheme is not just about electrifying trucks—it’s about modernising India’s logistics backbone. By giving the commercial vehicle segment a green makeover, the government is aiming for long-term gains in both economic efficiency and environmental impact.

If implemented effectively, this initiative could place India among the global leaders in electric freight mobility, setting a new benchmark for emerging economies worldwide.
